Tax-free weekend Friday to Sunday

Missouri’s tax-free weekend for 2025 will take place from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 1 to Aug. 3, allowing shoppers to purchase eligible items without sales tax.

By state law, the sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday. Certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items as defined by the statute, are exempt from sales tax for this time period only. Missouri is just one of 17 states in the country that offers sales tax-exempt shopping for back-to-school purchases.

Legislation was passed in 2003, and the first run was in 2004. It became permanent in 2005 with additional legislation and it was in 2023 that counties and cities could not opt out of the tax holiday, according to JoDonn Chaney, director of strategy and communications for the Missouri Department of Revenue.

During this weekend, certain items can be purchased tax-free, including:

• Clothing with a taxable value of $100 or less;

• School supplies not exceeding $50 per purchase;

• Personal computers costing $1,500 or less;

• Computer software with a taxable value of $350 or less; and

• Graphing calculators priced at $150 or less.

The savings also applies to teachers who are buying school supplies with their own funds.
