Sales tax holiday weekend starts Friday

Since 2004, Missouri has been participating in a sales tax holiday starting the first Friday in August to help families ease the burden on their wallet while back-to-school shopping.

The 2024 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4.

Items covered are clothing, school supplies, computers and other items as defined by the Missouri Department of Revenue.

The 2024 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday exempts all state and local sales or use tax taxes during the exemption period on qualifying items in participating taxing areas.

In Clay County, communities that have opted out of the taxfree weekend are Claycomo and Smithville.

In the cities that are participating, the sales tax exemption is limited to: • clothing with a taxable value of $100 or less;

• school supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase;

• computer software with a taxable value of $350 or less;

• personal computers with a cost that does not exceed $1,500;

• computer peripheral devices that do not exceed $1,500 in cost; and

• graphing calculators that cost up to $150.
