GLADSTONE — Students from Oakwood Manor Elementary, 5900 N. Flora Ave., took part in the annnual Turkey Trot run on Nov. 21. The Thanksgiving tradition sees third-, fourth- and fifth-graders sprint through a short course in the neighborhood around the school, competing for the prize of a pumpkin pie.
The school’s mascot, Ollie the Owl, was on hand to encourage students.
Oak Park High School cheerleaders and the high school band’s drum line added to the excitement as they cheered on runners crossing the finish line. Other grades from the school lined the course donning turkey hats and holding signs to cheer on their classmates.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office blocked off streets near the school and monitored traffic to ensure a safe course for students.
“The event is a cherished Thanksgiving tradition at Oakwood Manor combining physical activity, gratitude and the holiday celebration. It promotes healthy habits, teamwork and community spirit,” reads an event release from the school district.
