Oak Park student wins Snake Saturday T-shirt Design Contest

It’s a 3-peat for Oak Park High School. For the third consecutive year, an Oak Park student claims victory in the Snake Saturday T-shirt Design Contest.  This year’s winner is ninth-grader Bailey Fleener. Fleener was surprised in art class by Snake Saturday Parade organizers Wednesday, Feb. 26 and presented with the Snake Saturday trophy and a T-shirt featuring her design that captures the spirit of the annual Snake Saturday Parade and Festival.

The winning design will be featured on this year’s official Snake Saturday T-shirt, which is worn by thousands of parade-goers and participants. Fleener’s artwork was one of four deigns selected from artwork submitted by NKC Schools’ students and was put to a public vote on social media. The design features a snake playing a fiddle which creatively reflects the parade’s theme this year, “Fiddlin’ Around Town.” This is the seventh year for the art design contest.

Fleener was shocked when it was announced she had won the contest saying, “I was not expecting this, it was amazing. I’m so happy!”

Fleener’s art teacher Tu Wana Williams shares the excitement, “It’s an honor and privilege to work with amazing and talented students, like Bailey, here at Oak Park. It’s even more amazing that it’s a 3-peat for us with the Snake Saturday competition. Blue on blue through and through!”

Fleener will receive recognition at the parade’s Grand Marshal celebration and honored by riding in the parade March 15, in North Kansas City.
