LIBERTY — After six years on the run, Saul Bermudez, wanted on second-degree murder and armed criminal action felony charges, is in custody.
“Law enforcement officers with the United States Marshals Service arrested Bermudez and delivered him to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center after coordinating his surrender,” reads a Sept. 25 statement from Clay County Prosecutor Zach Thompson’s office.
Bermudez was indicted by Clay County grand jury in December of 2018 following the shooting death in March of the same year of Erick Estrada. Estrada was an employee of Cascone’s Restaurant on North Oak Trafficway in Kansas City who was shot and killed behind the restaurant. At the time of his death, Estrada, 18, was a senior at North Kansas City High School and had only been working at the restaurant for a couple of weeks while also attending the Northland Career Center’s culinary academy. Estrada, former co-workers and friends said, wanted to become a chef.
Bermudez remains in the county jail in Liberty in lieu of $1 million bond.
“The dogged determination of law enforcement officers to track down the defendant is a testament to the service these public servants provide our communities on a daily basis,” said Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson.
