GLADSTONE — Gladstone board and commission members help advise the mayor, city council and others on the city leadership team on issues such as planning and zoning, parks, capital improvements and neighborhoods.
There are openings for board and commission members with terms beginning in January for the following:
• The Arts Commission — Consists of up to nine members appointed by the mayor and city council who recommend projects to artistically enhance the city to be funded from the capital improvements budget.
• The Board of Zoning Adjustment — Comprised of five members and three alternates appointed by the council for five-year staggered terms. It meets on call of the chairman to hear and render decisions on appeals for variance or modification to the zoning ordinance where there are practical difficulties or unnecessary hardships in compliance with the strict letter of the law.
• The capital improvement program committee — Consists consists of six citizen members, one council member, two Parks & Recreation Advisory Board members, three Planning Commission members and one Special Road District No. 3 member. Citizen members are appointed for three-year staggered terms. It is responsible for reviewing the infrastructure needs of the city. The committee also recommends an annual capital improvement program to the city council.
• The Environmental Management Advisory Committee — Consists of nine members appointed by the mayor upon recommendation by the council. Members are appointed for three-year terms. Current interests of the committee include urban gardens, energy efficient housing and storm water management by the use of rain barrels.
• The Neighborhood Commission — Consists of six citizen members appointed by the mayor and council for three-year staggered terms. It is responsible for considering ways and means to enhance the lives of residents by facilitating and encouraging community awareness of and participation in neighborhood activities.
• The Planning Commission — Consists of 12 members, appointed by the council, who serve four-year, staggered terms. It reviews and makes recommendations on various planning matters such as rezoning, site plan reviews, zoning ordinance amendments, street vacations and future land use recommendations. This commission is an advisory board with recommending authority only.
• Tax Increment Financing Commission — Consists of six members appointed by the city council, who serve four-year staggered terms. It designates redevelopment project areas and approved redevelopment plans in accordance with the tax increment financing laws of the state.
