CLAY COUNTY — Trial dates in 2025 are scheduled for two brothers charged in the shooting that injured two earlier this year at North Kansas City High School.
The shooting occurred outside a basketball game on March 2 and involved two groups. A speech and debate event was also taking place at the school at the time of the shooting.
“During the exchange of gunfire, two people were wounded. One was a person under the age of 18 who was not associated with either group. The other age person was part of the first group of young men seen leaving the basketball game. Surveillance shows him falling to the ground while being shot at by several young men. He is then seen raising a black handgun and firing one time,” said Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zach Thompson during a press conference in March.
According to Thompson, security footage shows a total of five individuals from the two groups shooting firearms. More than 50 shell casings were recovered from the scene.
Jury trials are set for Michael Smallwood, 19, and Lavon’dre Smallwood, 18. Lavon’dre’s trial is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 24 in Clay County Circuit Court. Michael’s trial is slated for 9 a.m. March 24. Michael faces felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and aiding or abetting a person discharging or shooting a firearm while Lavon’dre is charged with felony assault, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and aiding or abetting a person discharging or shooting a firearm.
As of Aug. 22, Michael is out of jail on $250,000 bond as he awaits trial. Lavon’dre remains in Clay County Detention Center in Liberty.
“No one should have to fear being shot at a high school basketball game in Clay County,” Thompson said at the March press conference. “These events are meant to bring our community together. … You will be held to account, and justice will find you inside a Clay County courtroom.”
