KANSAS CITY NORTH — The Kansas City Police Department has taken over the investigation of a Clay County Sheriff’s Office deputy-involved shooting that took place around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 30 near 50th and North Oak Trafficway.
Reports of a man breaking car windows with a machete in the Englewood Shopping Center brought officers to the scene.
Before KCPD officers arrived, the suspect left the scene. After being given a description, Clay County Sheriff’s deputies found the suspect walking along North Oak Trafficway.
Deputies approached the man who pulled out his knife and ran into a nearby wooded area. A foot chase was initiated, and additional deputies were called to assist with apprehending the armed man.
The suspect did not comply with verbal commands to drop the knife.
The suspect then charged at the deputies multiple times, and two deputies discharged their duty weapons, striking the suspect. A third deputy took care of the suspect’s wounds until EMS arrived at the scene.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says the deputies are not hurt, and the person they shot appears to have non-life threatening wounds.
More details will be shared as they become available.
