Scam calls inundating Clay County residents, says sheriff’s office

CLAY COUNTY — Clay County Sheriff’s Office Public Relations Manager Sarah Boyd shared that a scammer is purporting to be one of the deputies and is calling “lots of of Clay County residents today, Wednesday, June 25, leaving messages and asking them to call the phone number of 816-200-0795.”

Boyd said if Clay Countians call the number, she said it sounds like a real phone tree of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a scam,” she said.

The main administrative number to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office is 407-3750 and the non-emergency number is 407-3700.

“In the fake phone tree, all the numbers you press go to the same option: civil service. The fake phone tree also directs you to a federal civil service web site. It looks very real, but if you examine in it closely, you’ll find all the links on the page go to the same place: an account log-in page. The URL also ends in .org. All federal web sites end in .gov,” Boyd shared in a press release.

Other than that, it’s the same “you missed jury duty and there’s a warrant for your arrest” scam that gets perpetrated all the time, but the phone tree and web site add a more sophisticated level of deception.
