Experts urge sober driving on Super Bowl Sunday

With Super Bowl Sunday days away, experts are reminding drivers that Missouri is ranked ninth in the United States for the worst impaired driving. According to the latest data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol was involved in 45% of all fatal crashes nationally on Super Bowl Sunday in 2022.

With more than 325 million gallons of beer consumed on Super Bowl Sunday coupled with late-night celebrations and post-game commutes, the risks for impaired driving increase. Nationwide, impaired driving fatalities have risen 33% since 2019, reports Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

To address this, MADD, is teaming up with Diageo, the NFL and Uber on the “Take a Minute. Make a Plan” campaign — a lifesaving initiative urging football fans to spend 60 seconds arranging a safe ride home before they celebrate on game day.

“Football fans already spend 690 minutes a week thinking about the game. Taking just one of those minutes to plan a safe ride home could save countless lives,” reads a released statement from campaign organizers.

By making safety planning a seamless part of game-day traditions, this campaign shifts the narrative from reacting to impaired driving tragedies to preventing them.

“It’s not just about raising awareness — it’s about setting a new standard for public safety, proving that simple actions can have a monumental impact,” reads the released statement.
