LaVon Sheumaker, of Foxwood Springs Senior Living, Raymore, MO, passed away Thursday, August 12, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held October 10, 2021, noon to 4 p.m., at Memorial Park in Raymore, MO.

Born Bertha LaVon Hartschen, September 23, 1925, near Hatfield, MO, to Charles and Emma Elva (Parman) Hartschen, she was the fourth of five children and the only girl. Growing up on a farm during The Great Depression, she learned to cook, sew, garden, tend chickens, do laundry with a washboard and play the piano, which she did in church.

During WWII, she worked at an office in Mt. Ayr, IA. Three of her co-workers were sisters and they introduced her to their brother, Clinton Spencer Sheumaker, who was serving in WWII. They married on September 7, 1946, in Redding, IA.

After college at Iowa State, they lived in Newton and Emmetsburg, IA, where sons Craig Clinton and Gary Alan were born. Later, in Omaha, son Rodney David was born.

In 1963, the family settled in Gladstone. They became active members of the Meadowbrook Methodist Church, and had key roles in the design and construction of the new sanctuary.

LaVon was an “Avon Lady”, and she and Clint worked with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. After moving to Kansas City, she attended beauty school and had a salon in their home for twenty years.

While retired they traveled the United States, parts of Mexico and Canada. They wintered in Texas. A skilled homemaker and seamstress, LaVon made their RVs homes on wheels. They also visited Europe, Alaska and Hawaii with family members.

In 2009, they moved to Foxwood Springs, making many friends and playing bridge. LaVon also led exercise classes. After Clint’s passing in 2013, she lived an active independent life, until developing dementia.

LaVon is survived by her three sons, their families (five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren) as well as a large, extended family.

LaVon always made people feel loved and cared for. She is remembered especially for her hospitality, sewing, lasagna, popcorn, peanut brittle, chocolate chip cookies and gooseberry pie.
